thanet at war
Margate, Ramsgate and Broadstairs during conflict...
The towns of Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate saw significant conflict during the WWI and WWII, with large amounts of bombs landing in the area, as well as the significance of the coastal areas and their proximity to mainland Europe.
Bygone Days Historical Group are holding a special 'Thanet at War' event on the weekend of the 26-27th July to help re-create life in the 1940's in Thanet, including memorabilia, displays, military vehicles.
2014 also sees the iconic reopening of the Ramsgate Tunnels, a town built beneath the town to help protect the local residents of Ramsgate from the bombs flying overhead. 1,000 people lived down in here in their makeshift homes, and now, for the first time in 75 years, visitors can see this unique underground experience in guided tours of the complex.
